SIFs require clear goals, not chasing returns: Edelweiss CEO

Radhika Gupta, MD and CEO of Edelweiss Mutual Fund, advised investors to approach Specialised Investment Funds with defined portfolio objectives rather than pursuing new products or higher returns. Speaking at the ET Alpha Wealth Summit 2.0, she emphasized tax efficiency and the critical need to understand derivatives-based strategies before committing capital.

Radhika Gupta, Managing Director and CEO of Edelweiss Mutual Fund, outlined key principles for investing in Specialised Investment Funds (SIFs) at the ET Alpha Wealth Summit 2.0. According to her remarks, investors should establish clear portfolio goals before allocating to SIFs, avoiding the common pitfall of chasing newly launched products or elevated returns without strategic alignment. Gupta highlighted that SIFs offer tax efficiency benefits, a feature that appeals to sophisticated investors seeking optimization of their investment outcomes. However, she stressed that this advantage should not drive investment decisions in isolation.

The Edelweiss executive underscored the importance of comprehending derivatives-based strategies that often underpin SIF structures. Before investing, Gupta recommended that market participants conduct thorough due diligence encompassing risk assessment, cost evaluation, and realistic return expectation calibration. Her commentary suggested that many retail and institutional investors may overlook these fundamental steps, leading to misaligned positions.

SIFs represent a growing segment in India's investment landscape, attracting attention as markets evolve and investors seek diversified strategies beyond traditional mutual fund categories. Understanding the mechanics and associated costs of these vehicles is critical for portfolio construction. Gupta's guidance reflects broader industry concerns about investor education and the need for disciplined portfolio management, particularly as newer investment vehicles gain prominence in the market.
